I Heart Yakima
Orchard Road
Hi y'all,

First, thank you. We are so happy that you all continue to build pride in Yakima! You've gifted lots of tees, hats and other goodies, which means there are so many more folks 'wearing their heart on their sleeve.' Our goods are a tangible reminder that Yakima is a place to be proud of. And that gives us all the feels.

Speaking of us, there are a few personal updates to share. I Heart Yakima has been a small, 100% volunteer organization since day one, so personal changes make a big impact.
Lauren Lizardo & her mighty trailer
We are so thrilled to welcome the talented Lauren Lizardo to the I Heart Yakima team. Lauren recently returned to the Valley and has a huge heart for the community. She is a whiz with finances, asks the best questions, and brings a fresh and needed perspective.

Want to get to know her a little better? She wrote you a note - check it out below!
Jack & Jessica
In the course of the last 13 months, Jessica and her husband Sean welcomed their first child, Jack, and took a new opportunity in Loveland, Colorado. Jessica has been actively working on IHY from Loveland and is excited, even from afar, to see what's next for Yakima.
Bridget Russel with family at the Capitol Theatre
And Bridget’s still here, sharing the good things in town and experiencing lots of change – on a personal level - with her teen son and tween daughter. You might see her dropping merch off at the Shipping Shop or Provisions on occasion. Say hi when you do!

INSIDE OUT
As we look back, we’re so proud of what we accomplished with you in the last year. In 2017, we purposefully dedicated nearly all our time and funds to INSIDE OUT, and we couldn't be happier that we did. It was incredible to connect with Yakima in such a creative way!  So organizationally speaking, 2018 was about reconnecting, re-evaluating, and recovering.

Being that it’s January, we’re off to the races and discussing how I Heart Yakima can serve and succeed in 2019 and beyond. We’ll be sharing it all with you as we move forward.  Drop us a line if you have any words of advice, encouragement, or ideas.
Local love,
Bridget Russel, Lauren Lizardo, Jessica Hawkins
HELLO FROM LAUREN LIZARDO
I rolled into town with my trailer in tow a couple winters ago to ski and refill my cup with family and friend time and my mom’s chicken adobo. I intended to leave at snow’s melt. But then spring arrived with sunshine and asparagus season. Then, I got the urge to pickle. Next thing I knew, cherries were ripe, my stomach found Crafted, and I made new friends. My cup runneth over. The road beckoned, but the promise of watermelons, wiener dog racespupusas, and my sweet community kept me from rolling away.

Pickling
I heart Yakima deeply, rough edges and all. It is, at-once, gritty, stunning, unpredictable, inspiring. I love watching the changing local business landscape and how folks band together to address community issues. I especially love that while not every business nor cause is a win, the discourse is lively, and we persevere to find the balance of old and new, of good and bad, in the name of what is best and next for our mighty town.

I've been tuning into local conversations, wondering how best to plug-in to the ongoing work to advance the local goodness. I’ve been cheering on the expanding footprint of Rooted. I’ve pounded metal at YMS. I've listened to the stories of the artists, makers, students, entrepreneurs drawn to the valley. I’ve bathed in the positivity cultivated by #iheartyakima.

While I can be nostalgic for the times when White Pass had a rope tow, and Rainier was the only beer, I smile wide when I reflect on the changes since I was wearing my itchy St. Joe’s uniform, playing make-believe on the stage in the Filipino Hall. And although the sun and asparagus seduced me into not leaving, my excitement for an evolving Yakima and whatever role I may play in that keeps me staying.

Cheers to you and yours this New Year. If you see me around town, say hello!
 -- Lauren
