I Heart Yakima
The Month of L-O-V-E
Hi y'all,

Clearly we're into love - we put "heart" right in our name! In this, the month of love, we decided it would be a great time to launch our new newsletter format, which focuses on, you guessed it, love. Here are some of the new features you can look forward to:
  • The Love List: Unique picks from each of us and from friends of IHY. We'll be listing an assortment of the people, places and things that are bringing delight into our days.
  • Heart-nerships: There are so many businesses and organizations doing great work in our community. We want to highlight the work of organizations that we find inspiring and visionary.
  • InstaCrush: We're thrilled #iheartyakima has caught on in a big way - we'll be featuring the best of community-driven content through Instagram users' eyes (so remember to tag us!).
In local love,
Bridget Russel, Lauren Lizardo, Jessica Hawkins

P.S. If you're into the new format and want to support it, forward it to someone who’d like it or buy them a tshirt - there is a big sale happening February 11-16 (30% off)!
HEART-NERSHIP:
MONTESSORI SCHOOL OF YAKIMA
Montessori School of Yakima

When fundraising is essential to your organization’s bottom line, it takes a lot of guts to switch things up.

So when Montessori School of Yakima (MSY) told us they were skipping their annual auction to try something different this year, we cheered! With the over-abundance of auctions in Yakima, we’re thrilled to see a local non-profit use a new approach.

Montessori School of Yakima is launching its first online fundraiser – We Heart MSY. It’s an easy way to support the school, and you don't have to buy a ticket or an auction item. MSY was founded in Yakima Valley in 1965, and has provided quality, hands-on Montessori education to hundreds of children. With 94 students currently, MSY has students from three-12 years old. Funds raised will support:

  • The MSY scholarship fund
  • Programs like Spanish, art, music and P.E.
  • Professional development for staff

Why do we Heart MSY? We love that it’s one of the few schools to offer a dual-language classroom, as well as Spanish taught in every classroom. And that scholarships are available! A toddler Montessori program will start fall of 2019, and they offer before and after school care.

So head on over to the We Heart MSY page to donate, or check them out on FacebookInstagram, or on their website to learn even more.

THE LOVE LIST: BRIDGET'S FEBRUARY PICKS
1. In an attempt to cook more – and healthier – meals at home, I’ve turned to blogs and cookbooks. My favorite is without a doubt Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat by Samin Nosrat. It’s great writing, easy to follow, and FUN. The illustrations make it even more zippy and down-to-earth. It won the James Beard award, y’all. Let’s just say I’m no Dan Koommoo or Lindsay Park, but my nightly cooking has definitely improved with Samin’s help.
2. The Good Life Project. This lovely podcast was recommended to me, and I just can’t get enough. From Radha Agrawal (Daybreaker and Thinx founder) to Mitch Albom (author of Tuesdays with Morrie), to musician Andy Grammer, to Garrard Conley (author of Boy Erased), listening to each guest’s story is simply enlightening. I especially like when host Jonathan Fields asks at the end of each episode, “To live a good life: what does that mean for you?”
3. Going to the grocery store is one of my least favorite errands. To my rescue:Pacific Northwest FreshEvery Thursday evening, they drop the most in-season, local, organic produce directly on my doorstep, and it’s magic. Their goal is to source from the Yakima Valley (a bit more regionally during the winter), and every week it's different. My whole family gets excited as we unpack our weekly fruits and veggies (that includes teenagers, people). LOVE YOU PNWFresh!
