When you want to work out

A tip from our heart to yours: Stop by the YMCA and ask about how your health insurance can possibly cover or supplement your membership fee. We were surprised that we qualified for a discount at not only the Y, but other local gyms like Volution, Achieve, Pro-Motion Functional Fitness, and more. Get ahead of the New Year's resolutionists!

P.S. If you have not yet joined or toured the new Y, stop by. The new facility is a fantastic addition to our community. We especially enjoy seeing all the kids using the basketball courts and pools.

Premier Fitness Studio

Team I Heart Yakima works out at a lot of places, but for our Pilates, and overall CORE workout needs, Premier Fitness Studio is our go-to. Owners Ken and Jackie have created a low-key, friendly gym where all fitness levels can find a class (they offer more than Pilates), some inspiration, and a familiar face. Bridget gives a thumbs up to spin (Cy-Core) and Pilates mat and jump, and Lauren likes a classic Pilates Reformer class or a treadmill workout when it's too dark and cold to run outside. There's no fancy locker room or supplements, and we are A-OKAY with that. We crush on the community, teachers, and Larkin, the studio dog, who sometimes makes an appearance and slows everything down with his cuteness. Want to try it out? Every Monday, there is a Pilates Intro class where you get the basics and an overview of the studio. You can sign up online or drop them an email. It's FREE. No previous Pilates experience req'd.

Floating the Yakima River Canyon

Floating the Yakima River Canyon is a summer must. The Canyon is the safest stretch to float, and we think it's the prettiest, too. Make sure you have your put-in and take-out spots figured before you venture in (we love to put-in at Canyon River Ranch and take-out at the Roza Recreational Site). You can DIY, or hire someone like Red’s Fly Shop, Rill Adventures, or Yakima River Tubing to get you all geared up. So grab your life jacket (be safe, friends), float, cooler, and buddies, and summer is served. (Photo Cred: CWU Int'l/Instagram)

Waterworks Canyon Trail

Seeing that pale green wash of color on the hills is such a delight. And the perfect hike to dive into the season is Waterworks Canyon Trail. Past Naches, the trailhead is just west of the “Y” on the right side of Highway 410. You can take in wildflowers, mountain goats, elk, and even bighorn sheep. It is a quad burning, elevation-gaining, 4.2 mile, up-and-back, dog friendly hike – get after it! (Photo Cred: Sean Hawkins)

Fee-Free Days in the National Parks

April 20th is one of five in 2019 and Mount Rainier* - our local national park - is less than two hours away. I’m planning an adventure up there during the next fee-free day, with a stop-off in epic Packwood to grab a beer and maybe find that vintage tricycle for which I’ve been searching since the snow melted. (Photo Cred: National Park Services)

*Note: before you go, make sure roads and entrances are safe.

Feature: Born to Run

We love it when people turn their passions into something new that lifts up our community.

Take Yakima natives and former high-school track rivals Erik Mickelson and Chris Waddle, for example. They dreamed of bringing an elite mile road race, with national class elite runners, to town. Over the last year, their dream has been made real, and their vision is clear: The Virginia Mason Memorial Downtown Yakima Mile.

*Please note, our partnership with the Yakima Mile is 99% love and 1% in-kind sponsorship.

Naches

All the new and old things in Naches have me smitten. My friend and I sipped delicious drinks and a tasty Cubano at newcomer restaurant, Nier the Nook (FYI, their bar is stocked with all the local and regional goods). We hopped across the street to Sticky Fingers for some sweet treats. We made friends with the cutest, biggest puppy and we spied D’Nile Tap House but decided to save it for the next time we return. I have a feeling there’s going to be a lot of bike rides out there soon. (Photo Credit: Nier the Nook)

Harvest Hosts

Spring may be delayed, but it hasn’t stopped me from daydreaming about trailer travels after the snow melts. My go-to app for inspiration: Harvest Hosts. Harvest Hosts never fails to deliver with its network of unique places to overnight park for FREE (think: farm, winery, distillery, brewery, museum, etc.). What’s not to LOVE about that?! There are hosts right here in the Yakima Valley. Warning: this app may cause spring-fever. (Photo Credit: Harvest Hosts)
